Uruglyuvitsa
The holiday is Sirni Zagovezni, and in Troyan it is observed not only with the traditional asking for forgiveness, but also with an old custom – chanting and the use of specially made torches called uruglyuvitsi.
As you walk through the town, you will see evening bonfires of different sizes and people spinning the flaming torches around them. The uruglyuvitsi are made from cherry bark, and the chants are meant to drive away evil spirits and fleas. In the past, everyone made their own ritual torch, while today most people buy them at the local market.
“Towards Lovech go the fleas, towards Troyan come the money!” – this is what the locals say as they spin the torches. With a smile, some add that another important part of the tradition is Troyan plum brandy, enjoyed one last time before the Easter fast begins.
The celebration brings together all generations – from the youngest to the oldest – who forgive one another, while the bravest leap over the fire for health. By tradition, the bonfires remain burning until morning, kept alive by the young men and bachelors.
